WORD OF MOUTH

Stand-up poetry from our countries finest writers.

The very first WORD OF MOUTH brings an exciting collection of poets, authors and wordsmiths from the four corners of the earth to the Norwich Arts Centre. For one night only I am very pleased to introduce some talented new literary friends from across the water; Mark Madden and Jenni Doherty, as well as welcoming back some brilliant locally based writers Agnes Lehoczky and Stephanie Leal. Mark Madden Mark has written and performed poetry for two decades, as well as organising events, festivals and slams. He currently works for Creative Writers Network in Belfast and is editor of the quarterly literary magazine, Ulla’s Nib. His work has been published in magazines and anthologies, such as Revival and The Lonely Poet’s Guide to Belfast. He has published one collection on his own small press, Timely Demise of a Trendy Conformist, in 2006. Mark has competed in several poetry slams. In 2006, he was a finalist in the UK Slam Championship in London and has was runner up in the Radio 4 Poetry Slam Finals 2009. Jenni Doherty Donegal-born, Jenni’s background ranges from publishing, book selling, the public library service, journalism, facilitating creative writing workshops plus organising arts events. Co-author of That Land Beyond (2003), Jenni also compiled Eve… a celebration of creative women (2006) and Wonderful World of Worders (2007) with Guildhall Press, where she now works as Marketing & Publicity Manager. She is part of the live poetry performance circuit and has toured all over the island of Ireland and Australia. Former member of the Poetry Chicks, Jenni now performs solo and has been widely published in many disciplines. Stephanie Leal Poet, author and my favourite American Stephanie Leal has a tongue so sharp you should come armed with plasters. Her satirical verses, visual poems and prose chunks gnaw at the edges of pop culture and the everyday. Her language twists and turns in unexpected ways, revealing a bold new writer ready to ‘french kiss life square in the mouth’. “These poems are an alternative news broadcast from a young American correspondent abroad in the world. Contained within them are many of the domestic and emotional snippets which CNN will never give you.” Martin Newell “Innovation, cannyness, smut and a very nice sewing image.” John Hegley Agnes Lehoczky Agnes Lehoczky was born in 1976 in Budapest. Station X (2000) and Medallion (2002), her first two short collections were published in Budapest by Universitas. She graduated from UEA Creative Writing MA in 2006 with a distinction. Her first book in English, Budapest to Babel was published by Egg Box Publishing in October, 2008. She is currently studying for a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing and working on her second collection of poems in English. Andy Spragg (MC) Andy Spragg is a poet. He has a blog at www.brokenloop.blogspot.com He is a regular contributor to Maddog Magazine, as well as founding member of the Norwich Poetry Choir. In recent months he has completed the script for SHOEBOX, a performance piece due to be staged by The Effort in 2010. He is also due to release 'NumbrStations' with sonofsam through Monkey Love Records, an exploration of creative process through music and writing. He is current editor for www.placetononplace.tumblr.com He currently resides in Norwich, and has become renown for his soup-making and cookery skills. 8pm-10pm Norwich Arts Centre Monday January 11th £5/4NUS www.norwichartscentre.co.uk
