Solid victory for City College battle-band
'Solid Agoes' win Summer Ball slot and Plug studios recording session.
Monday 31st May 2010
Each had a 15-minute slot with which to impress a 300-strong audience of student and public music-lovers. A panel of judges was also present, and each edjudicator watched closely for the acts that displayed special promise. Among the judges were critic Bill Vine, local musician Simon Grimbley and president of the CCN Students' Union, Shane Mann.
The bands (Calibre, Dirty Havana, Elixir, Gameplan, Lost?, The Mustards, Solid Agoes and Two Long Roads) were marked on music, performance and audience engagement. At least one member of each is a student at City College. After eclectic sets of metal and grunge, punk, rock, blues, acoustic and reggae music, it was Solid Agoes who eventually came out on top.
They will now be granted radio airplay, both on Future Radio and BBC Radio Norfolk. This comes alongside a slot at the CCN Summer Ball, and recording time at Kingsway Plug Studios. Elixir and Two Long Roads also receive recording slots for their places as runners-up.
Shane Mann said of the event:
“It was extremely successful, in terms of quality and the number of people who came along to watch and listen. We'll definitely do it again"
He believes that the event will also help highlight the 2013 City of Culture bid:
“Norwich has a really lively music scene. The success of these Battle of the Bands events shows that, and this one helped give some recognition to the students we have got. It was a great opportunity for them to play on the LCR stage.”
