A Public Service Announcement.
You are hereby formerly and actively encouraged, as a member and citizen of the tribe of Norwich, to go for a walk.
Tuesday 31st August 2010
Potentially, the most gnawing, achingly dull day of the week. With the fragrant memories of weekend hijinx long dispelled by Mondays' end, a Tuesday can often seem to drag. Indeed, after the blue-moon mercies of the Bank Holiday, a return to the working week is laced with an ennui so potent it can often lead to rank, outright despair.
As the saying goes, however, y'can't stop a good horse drinking. Or something. Anyway, the point is this: the sun is here again. Norwich is bursting out all over, and as I strolled leisurely down the pathways of my life early this afternoon, the city was alive in colour. Street painters by the marketplace; buskers on each corner. Those strange guys with the pan-pipes were there as well, playing 'Last Of The Mohicans'. Yet again.
It's good to be out in the sunshine, seeing the city at its best. If you haven't done so already, I hereby encourage you to reclaim the summer. Go for a wander. Sit on some grass. Following a week or so of rain, wind, horror and strife, a dose of clear sky, creativity and weirdness may be exactly what you need to 'turn Bluesday into Tuesday'. (That's original work. Pure gold).
There's something about our corner of the world. As the artist selling his wares on Gentlemans Walk sagely remarked:
"Just because we can't be a City Of Culture doesn't mean we're not a City Of Culture, does it?"
Quite right.
In a strange way, perhaps, we all know what he means.
