Andy Serkis, better known for playing Gollum in the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, is championing the areas hopes to host the UK’s first ‘Performance Capture’ studio facility.
Performance Capture involves the 3D mapping of the human body in motion, to allow for fluid visualisation of 3D modelled movement on-screen.
With help from local production company Screen East, Serkis is helping to place the city at the head of the UK special effects race. Big-name producer John Cavendish is also on side, pulling muscle from his recent Bridget Jones/Elizabeth; The Golden Age successes.
As the existing technology is based mainly in such far-off locations as New Zealand and Los Angeles, to secure such a high-performance special-effects facility would provide a massive boost to the Norwich film scene.
Mr Serkis has said that Epic Studios, based in Magdalen Street, are in a potentially winning position, and the Chief executive of Screen East, Laurie Hayward, commented:
“We're talking about sizeable funds. Andy Serkis is the leading exponent of performance capture, and is absolutely at the top of his tree. To have him on board is a major calling card.”
